Participatory Defense

Our strategy revolves around participatory defense, actively involving families in the defense process to impact individual cases and advance a more just legal system. Through weekly hub meetings, we create a dedicated space for families to gather, share experiences, and learn from one another, fostering a supportive and empowered community.

What is Participatory Defense?

Participatory Defense is a community organizing model that empowers people facing charges, as well as their families and communities, to influence the outcome of cases and shift the balance of power in the court system. At Participatory Defense Hub meetings, we gather both online and in person to support individuals and their loved ones. These hubs are spaces for fellowship, collaboration, and collective action, bringing together families, friends, and community members to work toward better case outcomes and challenge the dynamics of the criminal punishment system.

The goal of Participatory Defense is to give people the tools and confidence to take an active role in their defense, while encouraging families to support their loved ones with intentional and focused tasks. This not only changes the balance of power but also strengthens our sense of agency. We are no longer powerless, we are community members, not just defendants or bystanders.

How Do We Do Participatory Defense?

We meet every Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM to work on cases, help each other navigate the court system, and determine next steps. We engage with the courts and advocate on behalf of individuals through:

  • Writing letters of support
  • Attending court proceedings (“court watch”)
  • Providing testimony about community support upon release
  • Sharing information that tells the full story of the person behind the case

We also encourage people to learn more about the criminal legal process. We offer training and guidance on:

  • Writing meaningful letters of support that will influence decision-makers
  • Working effectively with a loved one’s attorney
  • Understanding the role of the defense attorney and legal team
  • Navigating legal proceedings
  • Additional topics: case law, court jurisdiction, and knowledge of judges, prosecutors, and attorneys
